The Malone University Women's Soccer team took care of business Thursday night in a 5-0 shutout win against G-MAC opponent, Alderson Broaddus. This win gives the Pioneers a 2-1 overall record, and a 1-0 record in the conference.
The Pioneers decided to spread the offense wealth with five different players scoring in as many different ways as you can imagine. The first goal came in the sixth minute of the first half from
Darby Burch off of an assist from
Molli Dunn. The goal was the first of Burch's career.
Brianna Smith scored her second goal of the season on a corner kick that slipped through the goal keeper's hands and went into the back of the net.
Just a few minutes later
Alex Carcano scored for the Pioneers on a penalty kick, giving the hosts a 3-0 lead going into the half. Thursday's goal was Carcano's first on the season.
Malone would score two more goals in the second half. The first came from
Christine Najjar off of an assist from
Brianna Smith. After Thursday's goals, Najjar and Smith have climbed up a few spots in Malone's All-Time Career Goals list. Najjar now sits at 7
th with 26 career goals, and Smith is now tied for 9
th with 23 career goals.
Kirsten Hilty added one more goal for insurance with 20 minutes remaining. The goal came from a rebound off the Battlers' goalie, Diyonus Walls, after a shot from
Melissa Soltisz. Hilty's goal was the first of her young career as a Pioneer.
On the defensive end, the Pioneers' goal keepers combined for a shutout.
Haleigh Seman kept the net empty for the first 65 minutes of play with 4 saves before
McKenzie Chappell came in to finish off the job. In Chappell's relief duty, she snagged another save for the Pioneers. The only thing that touched the back of the Pioneers' net tonight was the rain drops that the wind was blowing in sideways.
The Malone Pioneers will be back in action this Saturday afternoon against Davis & Elkins College. Saturday's game will begin at 4:30pm, following the men's soccer game which will begin at 2:00pm.Â
