The Malone University women's soccer team played to a 0-0 tie in its non-conference home match with Clarion University on Tuesday afternoon at Pioneer Field.
The Pioneers and Golden Eagles battled for 90 minutes of regulation and two 10-minute overtime periods, but neither team could score, resulting in the 0-0 draw.
Malone's record moves to 3-4-1 on the season following Tuesday's match while Clarion now holds an overall mark of 2-6-2.
Malone possessed the ball for a majority of the match and held an 18-10 advantage in overall shots, including an 11-5 edge in shots on goal.
The Pioneers had several scoring opportunities, but couldn't quite cash in. Early in the second half, forward
Christine Najjar collected the rebound off her own shot attempt and fired toward the open net. However, a Golden Eagles' defender swooped in just in time to make a kick save and preserve the 0-0 score.
A similar scenario played out again just over a minute into the second overtime period as Malone fired three shots in succession. The Golden Eagles came up with three consecutive saves, though, to maintain the stalemate.
Riley Nicholson delivered the first attempt that was deflected by the Clarion keeper.Â
Jeanette Soricelli ended up with the rebound and fired towards the vacated goal. But once again a Golden Eagle defender moved in to deflect the shot. Soricelli then gathered the ball once more, but not before Clarion's netminder regained her position and grabbed the save.
Each team used a pair of goal keepers in the match.Â
McKenzie Chappell and
Haleigh Seman combined for the shutout for Malone with Chappell grabbing three saves and Seman making two.
Brigid Stermel and Krista Mosi shared the shutout for the Golden Eagles.
Malone will be back in action on Thursday with a 2:00 p.m. home contest against Davis & Elkins College. Thursday's Great Midwest Athletic Conference contest is a make-up from the September 10th match that was called off early in the second half due to rain and lightning.
