The Malone University baseball team's season came to a close on Saturday afternoon in Xenia, Ohio after losing to Hillsdale College (MI) by the final score of 9-6. With the loss, Malone was eliminated from the GLIAC Tournament. The Pioneers ended the season 27-24 overall.
Â
Recap:
In less-than-perfect conditions, namely unseasonably cold weather and gusting winds, Malone managed to take an early lead with three runs in the bottom of the first. With runners on first and second, senior
Matt Davis crushed a 2-0 fastball over the right centerfield wall to give the Pioneers a 3-0. It was Davis' seventh homerun of the season.
Â
Malone starting pitcher
Braun Miller strung together four consecutive scoreless innings to start the game before the GLIAC's best offense finally got to the freshman in the fifth. A four-run inning for the Chargers highlighted by a two-run shot gave Hillsdale a 4-3 edge midway through the ball game.
Â
The Pioneers regained some momentum in the bottom of the inning when senior
Austin Pachan tied it up at 4-4 with an RBI single to right centerfield.
Â
Two innings, later Malone would take the lead on back-to-back doubles from
Keanan Locke and senior
Richie Mast. With a runner on second, Locke drilled a fly ball off the fence in right center and came in to score one pitch later on Mast's ground-rule double. Malone would enter the eighth leading 6-4.
Â
Hillsdale quickly cut into the deficit with a leadoff homerun. Later in the frame, a perfectly executed safety squeeze play knotted the contest at 6-all. The Chargers rallied for three runs in the top of the ninth to pull away 9-6. The Malone offense, meanwhile, was retired in order in each of the final two innings.
Â
Mast and Davis collected two hits apiece for Malone while
Keanan Locke added two hits and two runs scored.
All-Tournament Team
Following the conclusion of the event, Davis and
Brenden Wells were named to the GLIAC All-Tournament Team in recognition of their strong play throughout the weekend.
