Game Recap: Baseball |

Pioneers Fall 4-1 in Game Three of Ashland Series

The Malone University baseball team dropped its second straight 4-1 contest to Ashland University in a Saturday afternoon GLIAC South matchup. The two teams were originally scheduled to play a doubleheader, but game two was postponed due to rain. The fourth and final game of the series will now be played on Sunday, May 1st starting at 1:00 pm.

Recap:
The Eagles took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first all with two outs. An RBI double from Mackenzie Hampshire preceded J.P. Sorma's GLIAC-leading 13th homerun of the year that proved to be all the offense Ashland would need.

Malone scored its only run of the game in the top of the second. After singling to lead off the inning, Matt Davis would eventually come around to score on an RBI groundout from Joe Crank.
Davis' single in the top of the sixth was the only other hit the Pioneers could manage for the rest of the game as Jake Baldwin (4-0) and Luke Smith pitched the Eagles to victory.

Tyler Whitlatch tossed three innings of relief, allowing just one unearned run in the bottom of the fifth.

Playoff Watch:
The Pioneers, now 12-7 in the GLIAC South division, fell to the number three spot behind Walsh (11-6). Now 23-20 overall and 15-10 in conference, Malone still holds a firm grip on the fifth spot in the overall GLIAC standings and an at-large bid to the GLIAC tournament.
