Pioneers Split with Senators on Senior Day; Alexa Holztrager Breaks School Record in Runs Scored

The Malone University softball team defeated non-conference opponent Davis & Elkins College (WV) 3-1 in game one, but fell 2-1 in game two on senior day Thursday afternoon. Alexa Holztrager broke the school career record in runs scored in game one. She now holds the runs scored record at 109.

The Pioneers' three seniors- Kari Hall, Alexa Holztrager, and Emily Isla – were honored before the start of game one.

Malone will travel to Michigan to take on Grand Valley State University on Friday, April 22. The first game is slated to start at 3:00 p.m.

Game One Recap:

The Pioneers jumped on the scoreboard quickly, notching a RBI single from designated hitter Abbie Hughes to take the early 1-0 lead. The next play, Ashley Beck blasted a triple to left field, bringing in Hughes and Isla for the runs scored to take a commanding 3-0 lead at the bottom of the first inning.

After the first inning, Malone's defense dominated as Davis & Elkins didn't record a hit until the top of the sixth inning.

In the top of the sixth inning, Danielle Norton registered a RBI single to keep the Senators' hopes alive. However, Davis & Elkins couldn't notch any more runs, giving Malone the 3-1 win.

Hughes paced the squad going 2-for-3 at the plate, collecting one run scored and a RBI, while Ashley Beck gathered two RBI's and a triple.

Hall tallied two strikeouts and only allowed one run and no walks from the circle.

Game Two Recap:

With the bases loaded in the top of the third inning, the Senators' took advantage of Pioneers' error to collect their first run of the game and lead 1-0.

Malone tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning when Davis & Elkins pitcher tossed a wild pitch, sending Holztrager to home plate.

The Senators retook the lead in the top of the fifth inning, making it a 2-1 contest.

During the next two innings, the Pioneers couldn't get anything going offensively, giving Davis & Elkins the 2-1 victory.

Caley Ritts went 1-for-2 at the plate.
