Smith Scores Malone’s Game-Winning Goal in Double Overtime At Davis & Elkins

The Malone University women's soccer team registered its first win of the early season in a thrilling 2-1 double-overtime contest at Davis & Elkins College (WV) on Saturday afternoon.

It was a battle of the defenses between the Pioneers and the Senators over the first 45 minutes as neither team netted a goal in the first half.

It wouldn't be until the 83rd minute of the second half when DEC scored the first goal of the game to take a late 1-0 advantage with just seven minutes of play remaining.

Two minutes later, the Pioneers battled back down the field as forward Christine Najjar found the back of the net, tying the game 1-1 with just five minutes remaining.  For Najjar, the score marked her second consecutive game with a goal as she was also responsible for a tally in Malone's season opener at Point Park University on Thursday.

It wouldn't be until the 102nd minute of the second overtime when Pioneer midfielder Brianna Smith drilled her first goal of the season to give Malone the 2-1 victory.

The Pioneers will play their first home contest of the season on Saturday, September 12th at 2pm against the University of Maine-Fort Kent.

Game Highlights:
-Saturday's contest marked the first-ever meeting between Malone and Davis & Elkins
-Christine Najjar has scored a goal in Malone's first two games
-Kaela Kovanda recorded the second assist of her career on Najjar's game-tying score
-Brianna Smith now has three game-winning goals in her career
-The last time the Pioneers went into double overtime was at home on September 20, 2013 against Saginaw Valley State University (MI).  MU also came out victorious in that contest, winning 2-1.
