The Malone University men's soccer team won 3-1 at rival Walsh University on Monday night in their first Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) game of the season.
At the 14-minute mark, Malone's
Robert Nemes took the corner kick and directed the ball right to teammate
Nick Astalos who headed the shot right into the back of the net to put Malone up 1-0.
Three minutes later,
Sam Tonelli dished a crisp pass to Astalos who shot from the left side of the box to tally his second goal of the night, putting the Pioneers ahead 2-0 with 14 minutes left in the first half.
The Pioneers weren't done scoring as senior midfielder
Jordan LoPresti collected his second goal of the season to increase the lead to 3-0.
With just 20 seconds left in the first half, the Cavaliers were able to net a goal to make it a 3-1 contest. The score remained the same at the half.
Neither team scored in the second half, but both teams attempted multiple times as Malone posted 11 shots over the final 45 minutes compared to Walsh's 10.
The Pioneers will head to Michigan on Friday September 18
th to continue conference play against NCAA DII #6 Saginaw Valley State (MI) University at 3:30 p.m.
