Softball Loses Pair At Ohio Dominican; Holztrager Cranks Two More Homers


The Malone University softball team lost both games of a GLIAC doubleheader at Ohio Dominican University on Tuesday afternoon by the scores of 18-6 (in five innings) and 11-3 (in six innings).
 
The Pioneers will next compete in a home conference doubleheader against Walsh University on Saturday starting at 1:00 p.m.  The Malone seniors will be recognized at this DH.
 
Game One Recap
 
The host Panthers got off to a great start with seven runs scored in the bottom of the first inning and nine more in the second inning to grab a commanding 16-0 advantage after two frames.
 
Malone got on the board in the top of the third as rightfielder Mikayla Fowler tallied an RBI double. Then, the Pioneers scored five runs in the top of the fourth to make a bigger dent in the Panther lead, cutting the deficit to 16-6, as first baseman Allison Mercado blasted a solo homer, Fowler collected a sacrifice fly and shortstop Alexa Holztrager cranked a three-run homer.
 
ODU closed out the scoring with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth to secure the 18-6, five-inning victory.
 
Stephanie Byrne suffered the loss for Malone while Shealynn Zimnick and Julie Ward came on in relief.
 
Game Two Recap
 
In game two, the Panthers again got on the board first with three runs in the first while the Pioneers plated one run in the bottom of the first as Holztrager drilled her seventh homer of the season.
 
In the third inning, the hosts scored three more runs to take a 6-1 lead before Malone tallied two runs in the bottom of the fourth on a pair of RBI doubles by leftfielder Erika Gerber and starting pitcher Jillian Coyle.
 
ODU went on to score one run in the fifth and four more in the sixth to rack up the 11-3, six-inning win.
 
Centerfielder Emily Beck paced Malone in hits with two.
 
In five innings pitched, Coyle took the loss for Malone with Kari Hall coming on for one inning of relief (0 hits, 0 ER).
