Game Recap: Baseball |

Malone Splits Pair of Games At Tiffin

The Malone University baseball team tallied a 1-1 record on Friday during its Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader at Tiffin University.

The Dragons (14-23 overall, 8-12 GLIAC) plated an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth inning of the opener to secure a narrow 3-2 victory.  The Pioneers (22-16 overall, 13-9 GLIAC) bounced back in game two, crossing the plate in five of the first six innings en route to a 10-5 triumph.

The two squads will wrap up their four-game weekend series at Tiffin tomorrow with another doubleheader.  The first pitch of game one is slated for 1:00 p.m.

Game One Recap
Malone grabbed a 1-0 advantage in the top of the first inning on a two-out RBI single by rightfielder Matt Wheeler.  After Tiffin pulled ahead in the bottom of the second inning with a two-out, two-run single, the Pioneers evened the score at 2-2 in the top of the third when catcher Hayden Mobley came through with an RBI single to center.

The scored then remained deadlocked until the sixth as the Dragons brought home the go-ahead run on a Malone error.

The Pioneers put the tying and go-ahead runs on base with one out in the top of the seventh, but Tiffin starting pitcher Logan Sendelbach managed to work out of trouble, retiring the next two batters of the inning to preserve the victory.

Redshirt freshman Joshua Hurford started on the mound for the Pioneers and suffered the loss (4-3) after allowing the three runs (two earned) on six hits over the first 5.1 innings.

Wheeler, Mobley and shortstop Richie Mast each notched two hits in the contest.

Game Two Recap
A two-out, two-run single by catcher Matt Davis put the Pioneers on top 2-0 in the top of the first inning of game two.

Malone would then add two runs in the second, three runs in the third, a solo run in the fourth and two more runs in the sixth to build a commanding 10-2 advantage.  The Dragons then tacked on three runs in the bottom of the ninth to account for the 10-5 final.

Davis went 3-for-4 at the dish and drove in a total of three runs, marking the eighth time this year he has registered three or more RBI's in one game.  Wheeler also tallied three hits, including a double and an RBI single.

Freshman lefty Cody Ballay picked up his fourth victory of the season (4-3) after tossing the first five innings, yielding two runs (one earned) on just two hits.
