The Malone University baseball team used four-run outbursts in the second, fourth and sixth innings to pull away for a convincing 14-2 win at rival Walsh University on Tuesday afternoon.
The Pioneers (12-8 overall) piled up a total of 17 base hits in the nine-inning, non-conference contest as seven different Malone players contributed two hits apiece.
Pioneer catcher
Hayden Mobley opened the scoring in the top of the first inning by lining an RBI single to left-center. Malone then pushed the advantage to 5-0 in the second. Centerfielder
Brenden Wells chased home the first two runs of the frame with a double to rightfield. Third baseman
Jon Crank then added a two-run single to right later in the inning.
Wells and Crank again came through with RBI hits in the fourth. After making the score 6-0 with his fifth triple of the season, Wells trotted home on Crank's double to right. Wells is now just three triples shy of tying Steve Buso's single-season record of eight three-baggers, a mark set during the 1993 season.
A two-run double by designated hitter
Matt Davis and an RBI single by first baseman
Chad Neff pushed the Pioneer advantage to double digits in the sixth. Pinch hitter
Daulton Ritter then wrapped up the Malone scoring in the eighth with a two-out RBI single to left.
Walsh got on the scoreboard in the ninth, plating runs on an RBI groundout and an infield single.
Five different pitchers made appearances for the Pioneers, holding Walsh (10-6) to the two runs on seven hits.Â
Tyler Whitlatch started on the mound and tossed the first three innings while
Branden Carey picked up the win (1-0) after retiring all six batters he faced in the fourth and fifth frames.
In addition to Wells and Crank, Davis, Neff, shortstop
Richie Mast, rightfielder
Matt Wheeler and leftfielder
Ryan Froman all posted two base hits in the contest.
Malone will return to Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play over the weekend with a four-game series at Lake Erie College.Â
