1974-75 Men's Basketball Team Recognized

At halftime of a recent Malone University men's basketball home game (vs. Ohio Dominican University on Jan. 24th), members of the 1974-75 Pioneer men's basketball team were recognized as part of a 40-year reunion celebration for the group on campus that day. The event was initiated by current Malone men's basketball coach Tim Walker.

The photo order for the above photo is as follows (L-R) :  Steve Reinhart (74-75 Assoc. Head Coach), Dr. David King (Malone President), Phil Hodge (74-75 Asst. Coach), Ben Tillman, Mike Sekerak, Mark Klein, Gary Espenscheid, Phil Marzick, Charles Cox, Doug Hess, Roger Carlson, Steve Fansler, Charlie Grimes (Malone Athletic Director).   Not in attendance :  Jay Bowerman (74-75 Head Coach), Rufus Johnson.   Also on the 1974-75 team were Larry Arrington and Scott Gephart, both of whom are deceased.   In addition, T.C. Robinson (deceased) was a member of the practice squad.

A luncheon was held for the group and was also attended by the current Malone men's basketball team and coaches along with a number of Malone administrators, including President King who spoke to the group. In addition, a conference call was held with 74-75 Head Coach Jay Bowerman (who lives in Texas and could not make the trip) and many great stories were re-lived (for about an hour and a half!).

The 1974-75 team was the first Malone men's basketball team to qualify for the 32-team NAIA national tournament.  Entering as an unseeded team, they defeated #1 seeded Kentucky State University 85-77, having never trailed in the contest, and then topped Tri-State University (IN) in the second round by a score of 80-63.  The Pioneers lost to eventual third-place finisher Alcorn State University (MS) in the third round 101-87.

Malone University and Pioneer men's basketball team would like to again thank the 74-75 team for returning to campus and for a wonderful day !
