The Malone University volleyball team fell in four sets Tuesday night to rival Walsh University 23-25, 21-25, 25-20, 19-25.
The seesaw affair saw Malone squander leads in each of the first two sets before finally breaking through in the third frame. Walsh, however, never trailed in the decisive fourth set as they avenged a loss to Malone earlier this season. The Pioneers gave up a season-high 60 kills in four sets as the Cavaliers' offensive attack proved to be too strong.
Offensively, Malone tallied 49 kills. Senior Elizabeth Maczuzak notched a career-high 16 kills while hitting .353 for the contest. Veronica Gehring registered a .345 attacking percentage and 14 kills. Sarah Brent and Mallory Adams chipped in with 7 and 6 kills respectively. Setter Cathryn Miller accounted for 44 assists.
Defensively, Maczuzak collected 3 blocks and earned her 6th double-double of the season after finishing with 11 digs. Mallory Adams added three blocks while Maggie Hamrock tallied a game-high 19 digs.
The Cavaliers were led by the trio of Kelsey Snider (13), Devin Hummel (12), and Liza Pflugradt (10) who combined for 35 of Walsh's 60 kills.
The Pioneers, who dropped to 10-19 on the year and 3-11 in the GLIAC, will be back on Hal Smith Court this Friday at 7:00 pm when they welcome Hillsdale College (MI) for a conference matchup.
