The Malone University volleyball team earned a come-from-behind victory over non-conference opponent Ursuline College Tuesday night. The Pioneers avenged last season's 4-set loss to the Arrows with a 18-25, 25-17, 15-25, 25-16, 15-12 triumph.
Coming into the match with identical 6-16 records, the two teams were as evenly matched on the court as they were on paper. The difference in the match, however, was Malone's defense, as the Pioneers collected season-highs with 15 blocks (to Ursuline's 5) and 86 digs while giving up a season-low .056 attacking percentage. The offense, which started off slow (.049 attack percentage in the first set), was at its best late in the contest as the Pioneers tallied 11 kills on a .435 attacking percentage in the decisive 5th set.
Mallory Adams led the way for the Pioneers hammering home 16 kills. Veronica Gehring chipped in with 10 kills while Elizabeth Maczuzak added 8 more. Cathryn Miller reached the elusive 40-assist mark for the first time in her career, finishing with an even 40. She registered her 5th double-double on the season, ending the night with 17 digs.
Heather Papp led the Pioneers on defense, collecting a career-high and game-high 26 digs. Jordan Cloyd and Lynsey Trusty tallied 11 and 10 digs respectively. Middle blocker Haley Kool had a game-high 5 blocks while Adams and Miller each finished with 4.
Ursuline's Sammi Marcum, coming into the game with a team-high 33 aces, collected 8 more service aces on the night.
The Pioneers, who improved to 7-16 on the year, will return to conference play this Friday, October 23 at 7:00pm at home against Northwood University (MI).
