Women's soccer comes up short at Northern Michigan

The Malone University women's soccer team dropped a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) match to Northern Michigan University on Friday afternoon, falling to the Wildcats 5-1.

The Pioneers fell behind 2-0 early after the Wildcats' Carmen Villaruel and Paula Hafner scored goals at the 12 and 20 minute marks. Neither team would score for the remainder of the first half, leaving the Pioneers down by two at the intermission.

Malone's Brianna Smith would net her 7th goal of the season off a Leah Arnold assist just three minutes into the second frame cutting the deficit in half.

The Wildcats answered with two more goals at the 61' and 67' marks putting the game out of reach as the Pioneers failed to tally another goal. Northern Michigan scored once more at the 89' mark to put the finishing touches on their first GLIAC victory.

Game Notes:
- Brianna Smith's goal was the 18th of her career; she is 13th on the Pioneers' all-time list
- Leah Arnold's assist was her first of the season.
- The Pioneers were out-shot on the afternoon 23-5
- Goalkeeper Leah Rauscher collected 7 saves in the game, pushing her season total to 64
- Malone fell to 2-3 in conference play
