The Malone University volleyball team finished 1-2 at the Midwest Region Volleyball Crossover Tournament after suffering a 27-25, 20-25, 23-25, 16-25 defeat Saturday afternoon to William Jewel College (MO).
Coming into the match with identical 6-15 records, Malone captured the first set over William Jewel, but failed to win another as the Cardinals' defense tallied 72 digs and limited the Pioneers to a .064 attack percentage over the final three sets. The service game was strong in defeat for the Pioneers who finished the match with 12 aces.
Mallory Adams led the offensive attack for Malone, collecting 13 kills and 3 service aces. Sarah Brent finished with 9 kills while Veronica Gehring and Elizabeth Maczuzak each added 8. Cathryn Miller supplied 38 assists in the match.
The Pioneers set a season-high on defense, collecting 80 digs. Senior Heather Papp had a career-high 16 digs to add to her 3 aces on offense. Jordan Cloyd (13 digs), Lynsey Trusty (12 digs), and Maggie Hamrock (11 digs) all make solid contributions in the defensive backcourt. Mallory Adams finished with a season-high 5 blocks, while Maczuzak added 4.
Jenna Rau (16) and Kaylee Marquardt (15) combined for 31 of the Cardinals' 58 kills.
The Pioneers, now 6-16, are back in action Tuesday, October 20th when they travel to Ursuline for a non-conference match with the Arrows.
