A penalty-kick decision was the difference on Thursday night as Walsh University defeated the Malone University women's soccer team 1-0 in front of 375 fans at the Cavaliers' Milazzo Field.
Walsh's Lauren Jokovich's penalty-kick goal in the 33rd minute was the only form of offense in the tightly-defended affair between cross-town rivals.
The Cavaliers (3-0) outshot the Pioneers (2-1) 14-9 for the match while holding a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks. Malone's sophomore goalkeeper
Staci Hackett was forced to make four saves on the evening while Walsh's Michaella Stucky steered away three shots on target. Freshman
Brianna Smith led Malone with four shots, two of which forced a save from the keeper, while fellow classmate
Christine Najjar let fly three attempts with one ending up on goal.
The match was considered a non-conference matchup despite both teams being members of the GLIAC. The two teams will meet again on October 19th with that match impacting the conference standings.
Malone will return to the pitch Monday, Sept. 16th, when the squad hosts Eastern Oregon University at 3:00 p.m. Live stats will be available during hte contest at
