The Malone University softball team advanced to 4-0 on the season with a pair of wins on the second day of the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Break Tournament in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
Malone found themselves in a dogfight with Penn State Altoona (0-1) in game one. The Lions staked themselves to an early 1-0 lead behind a first inning home run from Kelly Chambers. Malone tacked on a run in the fourth inning when freshman
Alexa Holztrager came around to score after leading the inning off with a double.
The game would remain deadlocked until the latter half of the sixth frame. Junior
Katy Carr led off the inning with a single, then advance to second on a groundout. She would stay put after a lineout but a two-out clutch RBI double from freshman
Karissa Melgoza plated Carr for the eventual game-winning run.
Senior
Shelby Snyder moved to 2-0 on the season after giving up one run on three hits in seven innings of work, retiring 12 of the last 13 batters she faced.
Game two versus Green Mountain (VT) College (0-3) was much less nerve wracking than the morning affair. Malone set a school record by scoring 30 runs in the 5 inning shutout victory, besting the previous record of 26 set in 1999 vs. Robert Morris (IL).
The Pioneers tallied 19 hits over 4 innings. Every player in the starting line-up collected a hit and 10 different players scored a run in the game while 31 of the 44 hitters Malone sent to the plate reached base safely. Freshman
Lisa Cordova led the way, going 4-for-4 with a walk, four runs and four RBI's. Freshman
Amy Donze went 2-for-3 at the dish with a home run, double, two runs scored and three RBI's, while Holztrager also added two hits, three runs and two RBI's. Freshmen
Emily Isla led Malone with five RBI's while freshmen
Marionna Cane and Melgoza combined to go a perfect 5-for-5 on the day with four RBI's apiece. Four different players scored four runs in the game.
Stephanie Byrne started her first game on the mound yielding just two base runners in five innings of work. Byrne allowed just one single and one other hitter to reach base via an error while striking out seven.
Malone will try to keep the bats hot tomorrow when they battle Penn State Beaver at 9:30 a.m. and Penn State Fayette at 11:30 a.m.
