Seniors Carry Pioneers to Dramatic Overtime Victory Over the University of Findlay 5-4

Box Score

The Malone University men's soccer team (5-10-1, 4-9-1 GLIAC) prevailed over the University of Findlay Oilers (5-11-1, 3-11 GLIAC) in a game that saw nine goals, 11 yellow cards and a red card.

On senior day, the Pioneers received big games from two guys playing in their final match in the red, white and blue in Kelvin Aquino and Felipe Delgado. Aquino notched a hat trick, scoring Malone's first three goals of the game while Delgado scored the overtime winner to lift the Pioneers to the 5-4 win.

Findlay took an early lead when Alex Oliver bent a free kick around the wall and into the unoccupied corner of the Malone net just eight minutes into the game. Aquino responded for Malone, redirecting a cross from senior Josh Abend into the net to knot the game at one. Senior Rubem Miranda also received an assist on the play.

It only took Findlay 70 seconds before they regained the lead on a Bryan Klek goal. Klek's goal marked the final score of the half.

Ryan Poyle put the home team in a serious hole, scoring 37 seconds into the second half to make the score 3-1. However, Aquino would not be denied, scoring two goals in a stretch of five minutes to tie the score at three. Delgado was the assister on the second goal, while Abend earned his second assist of the game on the third.

Poyle continued the see-saw battle, giving Findlay their third lead of the game with a nifty finish in the 62nd minute. However, as was the theme of the match, Malone would battle back to force overtime. Their comeback was aided by a rash challenge from Findlay's Shin Nagahama, who was subsequently shown a red for his foul intentions. Malone capitalized on the man advantage when sophomore Sam Tonelli rose up and flicked a long ball from junior Luan Tufani over the keeper's head.

The overtime session was short-lived as a pair of seniors combined on the final touches of their careers to put an end to the wild affair. With just two minutes elapsed in the first overtime, midfielder Stephen Wannah stole a ball in the midfield and found a streaking Delgado down the right side. The Columbian took his first touch on the angle towards goal and ripped a shot past the keeper's ear inside the near post, sending the 170 fans in attendance into a frenzy.

The Pioneers outshot Findlay 20-16 for the game and 11-6 in shots on goal. The Pioneers also held a 9-6 advantage in corner kicks. Senior Felipe Monteiro made two saves to record his fifth win of the season and 21st of his career.

With his three goals, Aquino finished the season with the team-lead in goals with seven. Abend's two assists placed him second in the GLIAC in points with 18. Delgado finished second in the conference in assists with seven.
