The game, which was played in a harsh wind, was a tale of two halves. The Storm took control of the game in the first half outshooting Malone 8-2. Senior goalkeeper
Angie Nutial was outstanding in goal for Malone denying a couple of prime scoring attempts from Lake Erie's Paige Nemec with acrobatic saves. On the first occasion, Nemec cut inside and fired a hard shot labeled for the corner but Nutial flashed a hand to tip it off the crossbar and out of harm's way. Nutial denied Nemec once again late in the first half making a difficult toe save on a shot from close distance.
The Pioneers would turn the tables in the second stanza by outshooting the Storm 10-5. Freshman
Natalie Rostedt had Malone's first scoring opportunity of the game when she fought off a defender in the penalty area but she poked the ball just wide of goal with a sliding effort. Senior
Sarah Heckman nearly put Malone ahead in the 72nd minute when a corner kick fell to her foot but her shot was cleared off the line by a Lake Erie defender. Senior
Jasmine Evans appeared to have won the game for Malone in the final 15 seconds of regulation when her shot from distance caught Lake Erie's goalie off her line but the ball soared barely over the bar. Neither team mustered much of anything in the overtime periods.
Senior defender
Jen McFadden matched Lake Erie's leading goal scorer Kaitlyn Holland pace for pace in the back and was instrumental in the shutout. Holland managed to get in behind the Malone defense once but Nutial bailed out her backline with another outstanding save.
Interim Head Coach
Josh Jones was pleased with his team's response.
“The girls came out and played hard,” said Jones. “It was a good bounce back from last week for us. Now we just have to work on putting one of those chances away.”
Lake Erie outshot Malone 17-12 for the game. Nutial made seven saves in preserving her 2nd shutout of the year. Junior
Ally Smith led Malone with three shots. Malone will search for its first win in the GLIAC on Sunday, Sep. 23 when the squad plays host to a 3:30 p.m. kick off versus Notre Dame College.
