Malone Can’t Overcome Slow Start Falling to Wheeling Jesuit 3-0

Box Score
The Malone University men's soccer team four game winning streak came to a halt Wednesday afternoon as they fell to Wheeling Jesuit University (WV) at home 3-0.

In the 5th minute of the game, Wheeling Jesuit's Kevin Robson sent in an in-swinging corner kick that flew untouched into the goal. The wacky early goal seemed to deflate the Pioneers and the Cardinals took full advantage. Luke Roan would score in the 11th minute to up the lead to two and Ignacio Fernandez tacked on another in the 19th minute to make the score 3-0.

The Pioneers (4-5, 4-3 GLIAC) would settle in after the early three-goal deficit, outshooting Wheeling Jesuit (7-4, 4-1 WVIAC) by a 7-4 margin in the second half but the lead proved too steep for the Pioneers to overcome.

Wheeling Jesuit outshot Malone 12-11 for the game but the Pioneers held a 9-4 advantage in corner kicks. Malone's leading scorer, Rubem Miranda, led the team in shots with four but picked up his second yellow card of the game in the 87th minute leading to his ejection from the contest. Malone will resume conference play when Saginaw Valley State University (MI) comes to town, Sunday Oct. 7th, for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff.
