In a dual meet at the College of Wooster Saturday afternoon, the Malone University men's swimming & diving team fell short in a 151.5 to 118.5 contest while the Pioneer women lost a 154-17 decision. In the process, though, five Malone men's records were broken at the meet.
For the men's team, in the opening 200 medley relay race, the team of
Casey Meeson,
Grant Gillilan,
Royce Kantner and
Jesse Martin posted a time of 1:43.03. In the opening individual event for the men,
Jesse Dwyer pocketed a new Malone record in the grueling 1000 freestyle in a time of 10:33.08 for first place among five swimmers. Later, in the 500 free, Dwyer would take first again with a time of 5:12.08 while
Zachery Reuther finished third in the race in 5:27.17.
In the 200 free, Kantner posted a first-place finish in 1:53.38, which was just .08 seconds off the school record mark set by Dwyer at Urbana on Friday night.
Meeson led the Malone team in the 100 backstroke with a new school-record time of 57.00 seconds, breaking his own mark of 57.38 set last season. In the 100 breaststroke,
Chase Hooley recorded a time of 1:00.29 breaking his own school mark of 1:00.90 set earlier this season.
In the 200 butterfly, it was all Malone in the five-man race as Dwyer and
Mason Geib finished 1-2 in times of 2:10.46 and 2:14.72, respectively, to defeat the other three Wooster swimmers. In the 100 butterfly, Kantner led Malone with a school-record time of 56.42, shaving .10 seconds off the Malone record he set last year.
In the 50 freestyle, Hooley won the race among six swimmers as he posted a time of 23.02 while
Tyler Lunsford and Martin finished second and third, respectively, with times of 23.82 and 23.88. Hooley also paced the Pioneers in the 100 free event by recording a time of 50.62 seconds.
Gillilan captured a first-place finish, among four swimmers, in the 200 breaststroke by posting a time of 2:19.84. In the 200 individual medley, Gillilan paced the team with a third-place time of 2:10.44.
Meeson led Malone in the 200 backstroke by finishing second among a five-man field with a time of 2:05.57.
In the final men's event of the day, the Pioneer 400 freestyle relay team of Dwyer, Meeson, Martin and Hooley clocked a school-record time of 3:24.02 to eclipse the previous mark of 3:25.54 set earlier this season (Kantner, Dwyer, Gillilan, Martin).
For the Pioneer women's team,
Emily Duncan swam the 100 backstroke in a time of 1:10.79 and notched a time of 2:33.07 in the 200 backstroke event. Duncan also swam the 200 individual medley and recorded a time of 2:31.05.
Taylor Hetrick, who is blind and competed in the Parapan Games in Mexico this past November, also competed for the squad and collected a time of 1:41.92 in the 100 breaststroke and a mark of 1:27.20 in the 100 freestyle.
The Malone teams will be back in action next Friday night at 6:00 p.m. when they compete in a dual meet at Denison University.
