Box Score

The Malone University men's soccer team did all of its scoring over the first 39 minutes of play Monday afternoon in a 5-0 victory at Franciscan University of Steubenville. The Pioneers took command early on, netting three scores over a five-minute span to make the score 3-0 after less than 19 minutes had expired from the first-half clock. Forward Kobort Koffa then pocketed his first and second goals of the season in the 33rd and 39th minutes of play to put the match out of reach. Malone improved its record to 5-4 on the season with the convincing road victory. Franciscan, meanwhile, slipped to 1-7 overall.

Midfielder Kelvin Aquino got things started a little over 11 minutes into the contest, scoring off an assist from forward Felipe Delgado. Just over a minute later, midfielder Sam Erchick made the score 2-0 when he broke free from the Baron defense and fired a shot past the keeper. Aquino then found the back of the net once again in the 19th minute, registering his sixth goal of the year off another pass from Delgado.

After the Franciscan keeper was unable to clear a loose ball, Koffa fired a shot into an empty net to push the Pioneer advantage to 4-0. The sophomore from Liberia then wrapped up the scoring minutes later, posting his second goal of the match off a nice pass from forward Ryan Brumbaugh.

Franciscan recorded seven of its eight shots in the second period, but was unable to break through against the Malone defense. The Pioneers held an 18-8 advantage in total shots and an 8-4 edge in shots on goal over the course of the match. MU keepers Felipe Delgado and Tim Giesel combined for the shutout as Monteiro did not face a shot on goal in the first half and Giesel stopped all four shots he face over the final 45 minutes. Franciscan keeper Tim Vander Woude recorded three saves.

The Pioneers, winners of two in a row, will be back in action on Friday with a 4:30 p.m. match at NCAA Division II Tiffin University (4-2-1 overall).
