The Malone University men's soccer team played to a 0-0 stalemate with Geneva (PA) College in Saturday's National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) East Region Championship Match before the Golden Tornadoes managed to secure the East Region Title and an automatic bid to the NCCAA National Tournament by edging the Pioneers 4-2 in a penalty-kick shootout.
The contest, played on the turf field at nearby GlenOak High School, remained scoreless through 90 minutes of regulation and two 10-minute overtime periods. While each team had several scoring opportunities throughout the afternoon, the best chance for a goal came with about five minutes remaining in the second half as back-to-back shot attempts by Geneva attackers Josh Mann and John Shipley deflected off the far post and back onto the field of play.
Malone held a 19-15 edge in total shots and a 9-5 advantage in shots on goal during the tightly-contested match-up. Pioneer keeper
Felipe Monteiro posted five saves for his first shutout of the season while Golden Tornado netminder Bryan Butler picked up his sixth shutout of the year after stopping all nine shots he faced.
Baker gave the momentum to the visitors at the start of the shootout after making a diving stop on Malone's first penalty-kick attempt. The Pioneers also came up empty on their fourth PK as the shot sailed high over the top of the crossbar. With his squad leading 3-2 following Malone's fourth attempt, Geneva midfielder Jake McCracken then sealed the shootout win by firing the Golden Tornadoes' fourth penalty kick into the back of net.
Geneva, seeded second among the three-team East Region Tournament field, had advanced to face the top-seeded Pioneers after posting a 2-1 home win over third-seeded Houghton (NY) College in Wednesday's semifinal contest.
The Golden Tornadoes, now 14-5-3 overall, will represent the East Region in the NCCAA National Tournament which is slated to begin November 30th in Kissimmee, Florida. Malone, meanwhile, concluded its season at 10-9-1 overall, marking the highest win total for the program since the 2001 squad compiled a 12-7 overall mark.
