Box Score
In the opening round of the six-team Ohio Independent Championships on Tuesday, the #6 seeded Malone University women's soccer team suffered a 6-1 loss at #3 Ursuline College. With the loss, the Pioneers closed out their season with a record of 3-13 while the Arrows, who improved to 13-2-1, advanced to the OIC semifinal round on Friday.
The lopsided score did not reflect the fairly even total shots margin as the hosts held a slight 13-10 edge. The Arrows made the most of their attempts, though, particularly early on in the contest, as they scored five goals in the first 15 minutes of the contest. The first two came within 19 seconds of each other as Ursuline scored at the 2:42 and 3:01 marks, both off long passes and flicks that beat the Pioneer keeper. Scores by the hosts at the 6:18, 11:01 and 15:26 marks put Malone squarely on their heels from which the Pioneers were unable to recover.
Ursuline scored its final goal of the contest at the 36:17 mark to put the halftime score at 6-0 before Malone posted one goal of its own with 1:18 left in the contest.
Jen McFadden scored the Pioneer goal, unassisted after she made a long run from the midfield area and pierced the back of the net, making the final score 6-1 in favor of Ursuline.
In addition to the total shots being very close, the corner kicks were as well with the Arrows holding a slight 5-3 advantage. Pioneer goalkeeper
Angie Nutial, who played the first 45 minutes, posted three saves while goalie
Sam Soeder played the second half and notched two saves. The Arrow keeper, Rachel Smith, tallied four saves in the contest.
