The Malone University women's soccer team came out on top of a back-and-forth contest Thursday night, notching a 4-3 victory in its match at Hiram College. The Pioneers held leads of 2-0 and 3-2 thanks to three goals by midfielder
Amanda Hanlon. However, the Terriers fought back twice in the second half, tying the contest at 2-2 and 3-3. Midfielder
Cassy Daniels then finally managed to put Malone in front for good in the 81st minute after scoring off a pass from defender
Jen McFadden. The Pioneers improved their overall record to 2-8 with Thursday's victory while Hiram slipped to 3-7-1.
Hanlon staked Malone to a 2-0 halftime lead by scoring goals in the 25th and 30th minutes. Her first score came off a corner kick by midfielder
Emily Soricelli. She then tallied an unassisted goal five minutes later.
Hiram cut the margin to 2-1 just 22 seconds into the second stanza and then tied the match at 2-2 with another score in the 58th minute.
Hanlon completed the 40th hat trick in Pioneer women's soccer history in the 67th minute, putting Malone back in front 3-2 with her third goal of the match.
The Pioneers' jubilation was short lived, however, as the Terriers responded less than 60 seconds later, tying the contest at 3-3 with a little over 22 minutes remaining.
Daniels then came through with her second goal of the season at the 80:25 mark to lift Malone to the hard-fought win.
The Pioneers held a 20-10 advantage in total shots and a 16-6 edge in shots on goal. Malone keeper
Angie Nutial posted three saves while Hiram netminder Kate Valaitis stopped 12 shots.
The Pioneers will be back in action on Monday with a 4:00 p.m. home match against NCAA Division II Gannon (PA) Univeristy (5-3-3 overall).
