The Malone University women's soccer team suffered a tough 1-0 loss at home to local rival Walsh University on Wednesday afternoon as the Cavaliers netted the game-winning goal with just over 90 seconds remaining in the contest. Malone goalie
Angie Nutial and Walsh netminder Jillian Zanney each made several impressive saves over the course of the afternoon, holding the match scoreless through the first 88 minutes. Walsh forward Molly Martin then finally ended the stalemate at the 88:24 mark when she collected a pass from midfielder Lauren Frank and fired a shot to the near post. The Pioneers' overall record slipped to 3-12 following the hard-fought defeat while the Cavaliers improved to 12-4.
Malone's best scoring opportunity came in the 84th minute when the Pioneers were awarded a free kick from just outside the penalty box. Midfielder
Amanda Hanlon launched a strong shot over Walsh's wall of defenders, but her attempt caromed off the crossbar. The Cavaliers then managed to clear the ball before Malone could collect the rebound.
On the afternoon, Walsh held a 21-17 advantage in total shots and a 13-6 edge in shots on goal. Nutial racked up 12 saves while Zanney stopped all six shots she faced for her fifth shutout of the season.
Wednesday's result marked the sixth time this year that the Pioneers have fallen by the final score of 1-0.
Malone will look to bounce back on Saturday when the squad travels to Salem, West Virginia for its regular-season finale at 1:00 p.m. against Salem International University (3-10 overall). The Pioneers will then participate in the opening round of the Ohio Independent Conference Championships next Tuesday. Tournament seedings and match start times for the six-team postseason event will be announced Monday morning.
