Box Score

The Malone University men's soccer team pocketed a 2-1 victory over NCAA Division II member Wheeling Jesuit (WV) University Thursday night.  The contest, originally scheduled to be held at Wheeling Jesuit's on-campus facility, was moved to Bethany (WV) College's turf field due to wet conditions at WJU.  The Pioneers improved their overall record to 8-6 with the victory, marking the highest win total for the program since the squad posted an 8-10 overall mark in 2004.  The Cardinals, meanwhile, slipped to 7-5-1 with Thursday's defeat.

The Pioneers got on the scoreboard in the seventh minute of play when forward Felipe Delgado netted his eighth goal of the season off a pass from midfielder Sam Erchick.  The score then remained unchanged until the 81st minute as forward Kelvin Aquino pushed the Malone advantage to 2-0, registering his team-leading ninth goal of the year with an assist from forward Josh Abend.

Wheeling Jesuit's Conor McAliney then spoiled the shutout with about 50 seconds remaining on the clock, recording his first goal of the season to trim the deficit to 2-1.

Malone played almost the entire second half with a one-man advantage due to a red card that was issued to the Cardinals five minutes into the final stanza.

The Pioneers held an 8-3 edge in shots on goal over the course of the evening.  Malone keeper Felipe Monteiro worked the first 87 minutes in front of the net, posting two saves.  Tim Giesel then relieved Monteiro for the final three minutes of the match.  Keeper Ramee Naja went the distance in goal for the Cardinals, stopping six shots.

The Pioneers, winners of three out of their last four matches, will be back in action on Tuesday when the squad hosts a 3:00 p.m. contest against Cedarville University (8-5-0 overall).
