The Malone University men's soccer team lost a hard-fought match at home to the University of Charleston (WV) on Wednesday afternoon by a final score of 2-1. The Golden Eagles, ranked eighth in the most recent NCAA Division II National Poll, broke a 1-1 stalemate late in the second half as forward Harry Machacha delivered the game-winner with just over seven minutes showing on the clock. The narrow non-conference loss dropped the Pioneers' overall record to 2-6-0 on the season while Charleston improved to 5-1-1.
The Golden Eagles held a 1-0 lead at halftime thanks to a goal in the 37th minute by speedy forward Dion Peters. Despite the deficit, Malone grabbed the momentum at the start of the second stanza, tying the match in the 57th minute as midfielders
Kelvin Aquino and
Rubem Miranda assisted forward
John David Eades on his first goal of the season. With the match knotted 1-1, a red card was delivered in the 79th minute, forcing the Pioneers to play down a man the rest of the way. Charleston quickly took advantage of the penalty as Machacha broke through the defense less than five minutes later, netting the Golden Eagles' second score of the match.
Charleston held an 11-5 advantage in total shots on goal over the course of the afternoon. Malone keeper
Felipe Monteiro made nine saves while keeper Sean Teepen stopped four shots for the Golden Eagles.
Malone will return to American Mideast Conference play on Saturday with a 7:00 p.m. match under the lights at Cedarville University (6-2 overall, 0-0 AMC).
