2020: In a Coronavirus-shortened 2020 season, Kelsey Byers pitched 17.1 innings in four starts and five total appearances... Byers was 0-4 with a 6.87 ERA... Struck out 14 batters, including seven in the season-opener versus Concord (WV).
2019 G-MAC Freshman of the Year
2019: Byers pitched in 31 games during an exceptional freshman campaign in which she broke the Malone single-season record for wins and strikeouts…Posted a 20-9 record with a 2.20 ERA and 180 strikeouts in 191 innings pitched…Compiled 27 complete games and tied a school record with four shutouts…Recorded 13 games with at least seven strikeouts and four games with 10 or more…Allowed two earned runs or fewer in 21 of 30 starts…Went 9-1 with a 1.41 ERA at home…Tossed a complete game shutout with 10 strikeouts in collegiate debut against West Virginia Wesleyan (3/3/19)…Registered a season-high 11 strikeouts on three separate occasions against Wheeling Jesuit (3/5/19), Ohio Valley (4/23/19), & Walsh (4/27/19)…Spun a four-hit shutout with 8 Ks against Cedarville (4/3/19)…Struck out six in a one-hit shutout of Davis & Elkins (4/13/19)…Earned a one-hit shutout in a 1-0 victory over regionally-ranked Ohio Dominican (4/22/19)…Posted wins in G-MAC Championship elimination games versus Trevecca Nazarene (5/2/19) and Kentucky Wesleyan (5/4/19)…At the plate, collected 15 hits, including three doubles, eight RBI, and three runs scored…Led the G-MAC in wins, innings pitched, strikeouts, complete games, and shutouts…Finished second in the G-MAC in ERA and third in opponent batting average (.241)…Finished 29th overall in NCAA Division II and third among freshmen in strikeouts…Named G-MAC First Team All-Conference and the G-MAC Freshman of the Year…Voted Second Team All-Midwest Region by the D2CCA... G-MAC Pitcher of the Week (4/15/19)
Prior to Malone: Byers was a four-year member of the West Branch softball team. As a senior, she led the Warriors to the OHSAA Division II State Championship where they lost 3-2 in 12 innings. Byers, who totaled nine strikeouts in the title game, posted a 13-3 record in her senior season with a 1.22 ERA and 176 strikeouts compared to just 16 walks. For her efforts, Byers was named First Team All-Ohio and First Team All-District. Byers earned All-Northeastern Buckeye Conference accolades in each year of her high school career. She was named to the NBC Second Team as both a freshman and a sophomore and then was voted to the NBC First Team as a junior and senior. Byers also received All-District recognition as a junior after posting a 1.80 ERA and helping West Branch win the 2017 NBC Championship. Byers registered a microscopic 0.61 ERA as a sophomore. She tossed four no-hitters in the circle throughout her career, including the only perfect game in West Branch history. A two-time recipient of the Scholar Athlete Award, Byers plans to major in either Fine Arts or Zoo & Wildlife Biology at Malone.
