Tenequa Martin enters her second year as the Pioneers’ softball head coach in 2014-2015.
Martin led the Pioneers to a 10-30-1 record in her first year as Malone's head coach. The Pioneers started the season winning seven of their first 11 games. She won her first Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) game on the road against Ferris State University (4/11/14). Mattin also helped guide two players to the All-GLIAC Honorable Mention Team, one player to the All-Midwest Region Second Team and seven players to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Scholar Athlete Team.
Prior to Malone, Martin served as the head softball coach and senior women’s administrator at Greenville College in Greenville, Illinois. During her tenure at Greenville, Martin coached eight all-conference players, nine academic all-conference honorees and five NFCA (National Fastpitch Coaches Association) Scholar-Athletes. She also led the Panthers to the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) Postseason Tournament in 2012.
Prior to her time at Greenville, Martin served one year as an assistant softball coach at Oklahoma Wesleyan University, helping guide the program to 19 wins and a postseason berth during its first year of competition following a four-year hiatus.
Martin graduated from Lyon College in Batesville, Arkansas in 2010 with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and Economics. She excelled as a first baseman and pitcher for the Lyon softball team, ending her three-year playing career as the Scots’ career leader in numerous statistical categories, including games played, home runs, wins, and innings pitched.
“I am very excited to become a member of the Malone University community, and I look forward to getting started,” said Martin upon being hired. “I would like to thank Charlie Grimes and the search committee for giving me the opportunity to lead the Pioneer softball program. The vision for Malone University softball is very clear and I look forward to working with this group of student-athletes as we begin to make our mark in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.”
“We are excited to have Coach Martin join our staff,” commented Malone athletic director Charlie Grimes. “She will bring administrative skill as well as technical and strategic teaching to our program. Her experience as a high achieving student-athlete and successful NCAA college coach and administrator will be extremely valuable to our program moving into full Division II membership. She not only has developed into a great coach, she is also a person of mature Christian character and will be an excellent mentor and role model for our student-athletes.”
