Matt Burgess begins his third year as an assistant coach for the Pioneer men’s soccer team this fall.
A native of Bristol in the United Kingdom, Burgess arrived at Malone in 2013 with a substantial coaching resume. He had been the head coach at the Gloucestershire Player Development Center since 2012 in addition to serving as the head youth coach of Bradley Stoke FC since 2009 and as a sport coach for World Sport Ministries since 2008. Burgess was also a lead camp instructor for Ambassadors In Sport, an international Christian outreach ministry, in 2012 and recently completed his UEFA “B” coaching license.
In July of 2014, Burgess led a group of Pioneer soccer players on a missions trip to Mexico. During the visit, the group participated in sport ministry, orphanage visits and some manual labor while helping share the message of Christ.
Burgess, who recently earned his MBA from Malone University, received both an undergraduate and graduate degree from the University of Exeter in the UK, earning a bachelor’s in Applied Science and Coaching in 2008 and a master’s of science in Sport and Health Sciences in 2011.
Burgess has played in the youth and adult ranks for Almondsbury and Bradley Stoke Town football clubs while also competing during his time at Exeter.
In addition to his Malone coaching responsibilities, Burgess also currently serves as a staff coach with Ambassadors FC.
