Dr. Chris Carmichael enters his third season as the head coach of the Malone University men’s soccer team in 2011. Since Carmichael took over the reins of the program in 2009, the Pioneers have managed to increase their win total each year despite the addition of a large number of new faces to the roster and a shift to a new style of play. Malone will be looking for continued improvement this fall as the program leaves the NAIA and embarks on year two of the three-year transition process to NCAA Division II membership.
Carmichael, who also serves as a professor in Malone’s Department of Natural Sciences, played intercollegiate soccer for Eastern Illinois University as an outside midfielder and defender. He has over 15 years of coaching experience, having worked with numerous club and high school teams. In addition, Carmichael has also run technical training sessions for high school players and was previously a technical trainer for members of the University of West Florida’s men’s soccer team. As a coach, he has successfully completed the USSF (United States Soccer Federation) E, D and C licenses and holds NSCAA Regional, Advanced Regional and National Diplomas, as well as a Level 7 and 8 soccer referee license.
"It is a great privilege and honor to be selected to head the men's soccer program,” said Carmichael upon being hired prior to the 2009 season. “I look forward to being a part of the process that will help build a winning tradition at Malone and to see our men's character and spiritual maturity increased."
Malone's Athletic Director, Charlie Grimes, was as equally excited to have Carmichael join the Pioneer coaching staff. “Chris Carmichael is a dynamic and high energy individual,” commented Grimes. “We are thrilled to have him take on coaching our team, and bringing his positive attitude and tireless work ethic to our Athletics department.”
