Kyle Smith joins the Pioneer coaching staff in 2013 as the team’s pitching coach.

Smith previously served as an assistant pitching coach at Kent State University in 2012 as the Golden Flashes set a new school record for wins and advanced all the way to the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska.

After competing in baseball, basketball, football and golf at Louisville High School, Smith went on to become a three-year letterman on the Kent State baseball team.  The Golden Flashes won Mid-American Conference Championships during each of his three years on the squad and Smith played a significant role in the team’s success, compiling a 17-3 career record on the mound.  He was named to the MAC All-Tournament Team in 2007 and then garnered First Team All-MAC and First Team All-Midwest Region accolades in 2008.

Smith was drafted by the Cleveland Indians in the 20th round of the 2009 Major League Baseball Draft and played two seasons in the Indians’ organization before an arm injury brought his playing career to a close.

In addition to working with the Kent State pitching staff, Smith also gained prior coaching experience with the Stark County Terriers in the Great Lakes Collegiate Summer League.
