CANTON, Ohio - The Malone University women's soccer team earned the 2-0 victory over Lake Erie College at home on a cool Saturday afternoon. The Pioneers scored two goals in Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) action to take the win on Homecoming.
Malone (3-3-1, 2-2-0 G-MAC) found the back of the net at the 4:52 mark from the foot of Jojo Knight on a penalty kick goal. Lake Erie (1-3-3, 0-2-1 G-MAC) added a shot attempt at the 18 minute mark but was saved by Amelia Henderhan (3-3-1). The Malone offense kept the pressure with shot attempts from four different Pioneers to end the first half still with the 1-0 advantage.
The Storm opened the second half with a penalty kick goal at 48:13 to tie the contest 1-1. Knight had another shot on goal attempt later in the second that was saved by Lake Erie. Malone broke the tie with a McKenna Schwartzengraber goal from Maya Najjar at 68:00 to take a 2-1 lead. The Pioneer defense held firm in the final 22 minutes of action to hold the lead and earn the win.
Malone held the shots on goal advantage 5-2 and the corner kick advantage 7-2. Knight leads the Pioneers in goals with three this season. Three different Pioneers have three assists each to lead the team. Henderhan leads Malone with 22 saves on the season.
Malone returns to action on the road at Kentucky Wesleyan College on Thursday September 24th at 5:00 P.M. CST for more conference action.
