Burns Scores Goal #100 in 19-12 Win

CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. – The Malone University women's lacrosse team earned their fourth straight win on Saturday against Thomas More University, 19-12. The Pioneers jump to 10-2 overall and 4-1 in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC). The Saints fall to 1-11 overall and 0-6 in the conference.
 
Just 40 seconds into the game, Meg Ridgway caused a turnover for her own goal. Thomas More quickly answered to make it 1-1 at 13:52 in the first. Abbey Burns made it 2-1 with an assist from Emma Weintz. At 4:32, Burns with another assist from Weintz would get goal three for Malone. The Saints made it 3-2 after a free position shot. Sydney Atkinson recorded six saves to end period one.
 
Ridgway started off the second period with another goal, but Thomas More answered to make it 4-3. Shortly after, Alana Samek would nail goal number five for the Pioneers. At 5:01 and 4:50, would extend their lead to 7-3 with goals from Weintz and Burns. Both goals were assisted by Cam English. The Saints then won the draw control to earn goal four. To make it 8-4 at half Samek hit a free position shot. Malone made five of their seven shots on goal in period two.
 
In the third, the two teams would go back and forth scoring. At 12:44 English made it a 9-4 game and at 11:26 Burns would extend it to 10-4. Thomas More scored two goals around the ten-minute mark to cut the Pioneer lead 10-6. The Saints scored number seven with a man-up then continued to shorten the lead at 7:40 for a 10-8 score. Burns would answer though with two goals to bring Malone back up. Atkinson ended period three with a save for a 12-8 score.
 
Thomas More started period four with a man-up goal but Samek would answer man-down. At the 12-minute mark, Ashtyn Praeter scored three goals in a row, each assisted by Ridgway, to boost the Pioneer lead 16-9. The Saints scored one, but Caroline Bobo answered at 9:59 left in the game. English captured goal 18 for Malone but was answered by Thomas More to make it 18-11. A man-up goal from Samek secured the 19th goal and with 30 seconds left, the Saints would end it at 19-12 off a man-down free position shot.
 
The Pioneers were 79.5% (31-for-39) with shots on goal. Burns led the team with six goals and Samek with four. The fifth goal of the game for Burns was the 100th in her career. Ridgway had four assists and English with three. Atkinson (10-2) had 15 saves.
 
Up next, Malone will host Tiffin University on Thursday, April 9 for senior day. Game time will be at 4:00 P.M.
