CANTON, Ohio – The Malone University celebrated senior day with a doubleheader against Ohio Dominican University. Prior to the start of the contests,
Amber Miller,
Sydney Seaman,
Halyn Cawthorne and
Madi Pukansky were honored. The Pioneers lost both games by scores of 5-1 and 7-0 and fell to 24-18 overall and they are 9-13 in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC). The Panthers are now 26-20 overall and 17-5 in the G-MAC.
GAME ONE RECAP:
Malone took a lead in the first inning when
Marlee Pireu hit a double and then
Jessie Crookston singled up the middle to plate Pireu. Crookston stole second but was left on base for a 1-0 score. Ohio Dominican hit a homerun to tie it 1-1 in the top of the third. The Panthers extended their lead to 2-1 in the next inning after a bunt hit.
Cawthorne and
Morgan Cantrell each had base hits in the bottom of the fifth, but the Pioneers were unable to plate any runners. Ohio Dominican homered again in the top of the sixth inning which gave them a 4-1 lead. An RBI double in the top of the seventh secured their fifth run.
Mia Rose led at the plate going 2-for-3. Rose (13-10) took the loss after pitching seven innings.
GAME TWO RECAP:
Summer McCaw had three strikeouts in the first two innings but the Panthers hit their third homerun of the day in the top of the third. Two singles and a double followed Ohio Dominican's homer to put them up 3-0. Seaman and Pukansky were able to catch a Panther stealing second to close the top of the fourth.
Ohio Dominican hit another homerun in the top of the fifth to put them up 4-0. They continued to extend their lead to 7-0 after four hits and an error in the inning. Pireu had a single in the bottom of the sixth but was left on to give the Panthers a 7-0 win.
Cantrell and Pireu each went 1-for-2 at the plate. McCaw (4-4) left with a loss after pitching four innings.
