WHEELING, W.V. - The Malone University men's lacrosse team lost its last game of the year on the road to the Wheeling University Cardinals, 13-6. The Pioneers finish the year at 1-14 while the Cardinals improve to 6-5. In the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC), Malone falls to 1-8, and Wheeling moves to 4-3.
The first quarter was a hard-fought period as both teams held each other to zero goals in the quarter. The Pioneer offense was on the move as they recorded 16 shots, with seven of those shots on-cage. Malone controlled 71% (10-for-14) of the groundballs in the quarter.
The second quarter started hot for the Pioneers, with
Dominic Robbins finding the first goal of the game with 12:36 on the clock. Later in the game,
Ramsey Burnard scored a goal to give Malone a 2-0 lead with 5:41 left in the half. Not long after, the Cardinals managed to earn two goals before the half to tie up the game entering the third.
In the third quarter, Wheeling took control with six goals in the period. Burnard managed to score his second goal of the day off of a pass by
Quincy Dumarce with 9:52 remaining in the third.
John Mautz III and
Jackson Linter added themselves to the scoreboard to close the Cardinals' lead to 8-5 going into the final period.
In the fourth quarter, Wheeling went on a 4-0 goal run to extend their lead to 12-5 over the Pioneers. Lintner netted another goal for Malone, but it was not enough as the Pioneers fell short 13-6 at the final whistle. Malone struggled in the final quarter with possession, recording 10 turnovers.
The Pioneer offense was led by Burnard and Lintner as they both recorded a pair of goals each, followed by Mautz III and Robbins with one each.
Adam Rucker led the Pioneers' defense with three caused turnovers and seven groundballs.
Andy Lopez (1-7) made 13 saves despite the loss.
The Malone University men's lacrosse team will now enter the offseason and prepare for the upcoming 2027 spring season.
