Eagles Halt Pioneers

CANTON, Ohio - The Malone University women's lacrosse team lost to the Ashland University Eagles 17-2 on a breezy Saturday afternoon. The Pioneers are now 10-4 on the season, while the Eagles improve to 11-4. In the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC), Malone falls to 4-3 while Ashland stays undefeated at 6-0.

The first period was in the Eagles' hands as they held the Pioneers offense to zero goals and had a 6-0 lead. Malone struggled with possession, recording nine turnovers in the first quarter. Ashland's offense was relentless as they recorded 16 shots, with 10 of them on cage. The Pioneers had a tough time at the circle, winning 14% (1-for-7) of the draws. 
 
Malone kicked off the second quarter with a goal by Alana Samek at 13:50 to make the score 6-1. Ashland continued the offensive pressure to take a 10-1 lead going into halftime. Although the Pioneers were behind, they managed an 83% clearing rate (5-for-6).
 
The third period was all Ashland as they extended their lead to 13-1 going into the fourth quarter. Malone struggled in the period with a 40% (2-for-5) clearing rate and had only four shots in the quarter. 
 
The Eagles took control in the fourth period with a four-goal run before Meg Ridgway found the back of the net with 1:16 remaining in the game. At the final whistle, the Pioneers were defeated 17-2. 
 
The Pioneers' offense was led by Samek and Ridgway, both recording one goal each in today's matchup. Goalkeeper Sydney Atkinson (10-4) recorded her 14th start for Malone and had a 43% (13-for-30) saving percentage in the goal. 
 
The Malone University women's lacrosse team will end their regular season hosting their cross-town rivals, the Walsh University Cavaliers, on April 15 at 4:00 P.M for their last Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) matchup.
