Pioneers Earn First G-MAC Win at Northwood

MIDLAND, Mich. - The Malone University women's lacrosse team won on the road against the Northwood University Timberwolves 12-6. The Pioneers improve to 8-2 on the year, while the Timberwolves fall to 0-9. In the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC), Malone stands tall at 1-1, and Northwood begins at 0-1. 
 
The first quarter started in the Timberwolves' favor with a 2-0 lead at 7:44. The Pioneers answered back with two quick goals and later a third at 1:18 from Meg Ridgway to give Malone a 3-2 lead to end the first period. The Pioneers finished the quarter with 75% (6-for-8) of their shots on goal.

In the second quarter, Malone was on a roll as Jorjia Meza extended the Pioneers to a 6-3 on a man-down possession with 7:22 remaining in the half. Northwood tried to answer back, but Cam English gave Malone a 7-4 lead at 1:35. The Pioneers were successful on loose balls as they secured 4-of-6 groundballs during the second quarter. 
 
Malone took control of the third quarter with an early goal by Meza, assisted by Ridgway, with 12:24 on the clock. Later in the period, Ridgway scored her second goal of the day off a pass by Ashtyn Praeter with 3:43 to give the Pioneers a 9-4 lead. In the last 33 seconds of the quarter, Abbey Burns secured her second goal of the game for a 10-4 lead to end the period. The Timberwolves struggled with possession as they had 11 turnovers in the third. 

Malone continued their pace in the fourth, as Burns earned her third goal at 10:15, as well as her fourth goal with 6:06 remaining in the game. Northwood was unable to bounce back at the final whistle to give the Pioneers a 12-6 victory. Malone finished the fourth quarter with a 100% (9-for-9) clearing rate.

The Pioneers' offense was led by Burns with four goals. Burns was followed up by Meza (3), English (2), Ridgway (2), and Emma Weintz (1).

Goalkeeper Sydney Atkinson (7-2) stood tall in the goal for Malone as she recorded a 60% (9-for-15) saving rate.

The Pioneers will continue their Great Midwest Athletic Conference run as they travel to Pepper Pike, Ohio, to take on the Ursuline College Arrows on March 25 at 3:00 P.M.
