CANTON, Ohio – The Malone University men's lacrosse team lost to the Davenport University Panthers 24-4 on Saturday. The Pioneers now fall to 1-8 on the year, while the Panthers move to 4-3. In the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC), Malone drops to 1-3, and Davenport stands at 3-0.
In the first quarter, the Panthers went on a 4-0 run before
Ramsey Burnard found the goal on a man-up opportunity at 7:14 to put the Pioneers on the board. Davenport continued to dominate the first quarter as they extended their lead to 7-1 to end the period. Malone struggled to clear the ball as they went 42% (3-for-7) on their clears.
The Pioneers were only able to score one goal in the second period from
Jackson Lintner to make the score 9-2 with 10:57 left in the second. Davenport went on another run to end the first half with a 13-2 lead over Malone. The Pioneers struggled at the X as they went 1-for-7 from the line.
In the third,
Andrew Scott would be the only goal scorer for Malone at 5:20, to cut into the Panthers lead at 14-3. The Pioneers struggled with possession as they had seven turnovers in the period. Malone was outshot in the third by Davenport 11-5.
The fourth quarter was no different, as the Pioneers would have Burnard scoring their only goal of the quarter, making the score 22-4. The Panthers defeated Malone 24-4 at the final whistle.
Burnard led the Pioneers with two goals, followed by Scott (1) and Lintner (1).
Quincy Dumarce recorded three assists on the day.
Andy Lopez (1-7) struggled in the cage as he recorded a 27% (5-for-18) save rate.
Zach Johnson took over in the second half and recorded a 47% (10-for-21) save rate.
The Malone University men's lacrosse team will travel to Midland, Michigan, to take on the Northwood University Timberwolves for another Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) matchup on March 21 at 2:00 P.M.
