CANTON, Ohio – After an earlier loss to Northwood University this season, the Malone University men's basketball team got the win the second time around on their home floor, 67-65. The Pioneers now hold a 13-9 overall record and 6-8 in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC). The Timberwolves fall to 13-9 overall and 7-7 in the conference.
The first half started with buckets from
Josiah Pierre,
Nic Williams, and
Jake Bruns to give Malone the lead early on 10-5. With 11:02 on the clock, the Timberwolves made a three to tie it up 10-10. Northwood then gained a lead off a short scoring run answered by an
Emmanuel Oladeru basket, 15-12. To end the half Williams would drain two three-point field goals to tie it up, 26-26. He ended the half shooting 100% from the three-point line going 3-for-3.
Back-to-back and-ones from Pierre put the Pioneers up 36-30 to start the second half with 16:41 on the clock. Shots from Bruns and
Austin Niekamp brought Malone up eleven, 41-30. A bucket from
Logan Forbes and another triple from Williams gave the Pioneers their largest lead of the game 49-37.
The Timberwolves went on a scoring run to bring them within three points at 51-48 with 6:09 on the clock. Constant fouls put both teams in bonus and traded turns at the free-throw line. Northwood cut the Pioneer lead down to three at the final media timeout.
Northwood hit back-to-back shots to make it a one-point game but a huge triple from
Joey DeGeorge kept the Pioneers up 63-59 with 1:21 left in the game. With seven seconds on the clock, the Timberwolves made a layup to tie the score at 65-65. Williams ended the game with a dribble drive jumper from just off the elbow with just one second remaining to secure the win, 67-65.
Williams led Malone with 28 points and Pierre ended the game with 16. Pierre and Oladeru each led the team with six rebounds. DeGeorge had four steals on the game. As a team, the Pioneers shot 47.3% (26-for-55) from the field.
