NORTH CANTON, Ohio – The Malone University men's basketball team fell to the Walsh University Cavaliers in the 62nd Mayors' Cup Game by a score of 78-53. The Pioneers finish the season with a 14-14 record, while the 15th-ranked Cavaliers improve to 24-3. In the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC), Malone is 7-13, and Walsh will enter the postseason with a 17-3 record.
The first half was a slow start for the Pioneers as they trailed 5-0 within the first minute of the game. Malone found some momentum as they closed Walsh's lead to 18-17 off a layup by
Tate Aljancic with 7:48 in the half. From there, the Cavaliers went on an offensive run to increase their lead to 37-19 at halftime.
The Pioneers struggled from beyond the arc with an 18% (2-for-11) from long range. The Cavaliers had their success from free throws as they were 72% (8-for-11) from the line.
The second half was a tough one for Malone as Walsh managed to extend their lead over the Pioneers to 67-39 at 7:24. Malone was only able to cut their deficit to 20 points from a three by
Joey DeGeorge with 2:31 remaining in the game. Walsh took the game at the final whistle and defeated the Pioneers, 78-53.
Malone struggled against the Cavaliers' defense in the second half as they shot 38% (12-for-31) from the field. Walsh took control of the second half at 54% (13-for-24) from the field, and 63% (12-for-19) from the free throw line.
Nic Williams led the way with 15 points and
Josiah Pierre tallied 10 points in the season finale.
