BRIDGEPORT, W.V. - The Malone University softball team split a doubleheader on the road with the Salem University Tigers on Friday. Malone (4-2) came out on top in game one 3-0, but Salem (1-1) took game two 3-2.
GAME ONE RECAP:
Mia Rose started things off for the Pioneers as she recorded an RBI at the top of the first to give Malone a 1-0 lead early in the game. Rose dominated in the circle at the bottom of the third, recording three strikeouts in a row to end the inning quickly. The Pioneers were on the board again at the top of the fifth when
Aricka Young grounded out and gave
Sidney Conti the go-ahead run to extend Malone's lead 2-0.
The Pioneers earned their third run of the game off of Rose as she hit a single RBI where
Lacie Quarles came across home plate to put Malone up 3-0 at the top of the sixth. The Tigers struggled at the plate as they were unsuccessful in finding a run to cut their deficit.
The Pioneers finished the seventh inning strong as they recorded a groundout and two strikeouts by Rose to give them game one of the doubleheader. Rose (3-0) dominated in the circle as she recorded 12 strikeouts.
Marlee Pireu (1), Young (1), and Conti (1) all scored runs.
GAME TWO RECAP:
Game two started similarly to game one for Malone as Rose reached first base off a Salem error, which led to her third RBI on the day, with
Morgan Cantrell scoring. Right after,
Masyn Baker had a groundout to send Conti around and gave the Pioneers an early 2-0 lead at the top of the first.
The Tigers didn't back down in the bottom of the first as they recorded three runs to take the lead from Malone, 3-2. After the first inning, both teams battled for opportunities, but neither could score a run for the rest of the game.
Baker (1-1) had a tough matchup in game two as she recorded six strikeouts and three earned runs.
Summer McCaw took over the circle in the bottom of the fourth and recorded three strikeouts with one hit allowed.

The Pioneers will travel down to Cocoa Beach, Florida, next week to play in the Space Coast Spring Games. Their first game of the event will be against the Rockhurst University Hawks on March 8 at 4:45 P.M.
