CANTON, Ohio - The Malone University women's lacrosse team (3-0) bested Point Park University (1-1) on Wednesday afternoon at Pioneer Park 15-8 in a penalty-filled game. There were 36 total cards assessed between the two squads in a physical affair.
Â
Offense was hard to find early as there was just one score in the first 14 minutes. Malone's
Alana Samek buried one while in a man-up situation off the feed by
Abbey Burns. Point Park got back to even with just one minute left in the frame.
Â
Samek netted her second goal of the game less than one minute into period two and
Meg Ridgway went back-to-back to give Malone a4-2 advantage. Once again, it was Point Park with a goal late in the quarter to tie the score, this time with 11 seconds on the clock. The score was 4-4 at the break despite a 15-8 turnover differential, most of which by Malone.
Â
Ashtyn Praeter collected the first goal of the second half for Malone, but extended time in the penalty area allowed Point Park to rattle off three in a row to go up 7-5 just over halfway in the quarter. From 4:57 left in the third until 9:36 to play in the fourth, Malone went on an 8-0 scoring run to take full control of the game. Samek scored or assisted on six of the eight scores en route to a career-high nine points in the win.
Jorjia Meza scored twice with Point Park in penalty trouble to help put the team up 13-7.
Â
In the final three minutes, both sides were able to put one passed the opposing goalkeeper, but it was Malone that came out on top, 15-8.
Sydney Atkinson (3-0) got the win in goal with 13 saves.
Â
The teams were even at 12-12 on draw controls, with Burns and
Sarah Bricker tied for the team lead with three each. Bricker and
Regan Blythe scooped up three ground balls each while Blythe, Burns and Praeter caused multiple turnovers.
Â
The Malone women's lacrosse team is back at home for their next game on Thursday, March 5 against the University of Charleston. The opening draw control is set for 1:00 P.M.
