Pioneers Unable to Tame Eagles

ASHLAND, Ohio – Ashland University spoiled the Malone University volleyball team's attempt at a win streak on Tuesday. The Eagles moved to 8-2 overall and 3-0 inside the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) with a 3-0 win over the Pioneers, who are now 2-8 and 1-1 in the league.

Ashland dominated offensively with a .327 hitting percentage and 47 kills. The Eagles also held a 55-38 edge on digs. Tori Dawson led Malone with six kills and Mikayla Yockey had the most assists (11) and aces (1). Madalyn Coblentz and Jaclyn Jundzilo tied for the most digs with nine apiece.

A 9-1 scoring run in the first set helped put Ashland up 15-5 and a 7-0 run later on propelled the opponents to a 25-11 victory. Another massive string of nine consecutive points for the Eagles in set two made it 2-0 Ashland at 25-12. The Pioneers had seven kills and seven attack errors in each of the first two sets.

Despite being down 3-0 to begin set three, Malone had their most competitive period of the match in a 25-21 third. Back-to-back kills by Jaymes Gilbert and Emma Weirich sparked the rally and consecutive points by Annika Nichols and Dawson tied the set up at 9-9. The Pioneers claimed their first lead of the evening at 17-14, but the Eagles kept their composure and regained the advantage late in the set. Malone had a match-high 13 kills, but it was not enough to continue the match.

The Pioneers return home to Osborne Hall on Friday, September 26 when Malone hosts Walsh University beginning at 7:00 P.M.
