CANTON, Ohio - The Malone University women's soccer team won their match on Saturday afternoon over the Tiffin University Dragons 1-0 at Pioneer Park. In the win, Malone improved to 2-2-1 overall and 1-1-0 in Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) competition. The Dragons fall to 1-3-1 overall and 0-2 in conference action.
Â
The first half was very back and forth as both teams battled for early possession and momentum. These evenly-matched teams both tied with four shots a piece as possession switched hands multiple times throughout the first 45 minutes. The Pioneers slightly won in corner kicks 2-1 as offenses for both teams warmed up to each other. Senior forward
Brynn Mowrer had the best opportunity for Malone on a breakaway, but missed wide right.
Â
The second half had much more action as both teams were on the attack looking to score the game's first goal. Mowrer was able to grab the upper hand for the Pioneers with a goal off an assist from junior midfielder
Alyssa Schofield in the 50th minute. Tiffin continued to put pressure on Malone with their offensive attack, but was unable to match the lone goal. The Dragons did attempt 12 second half shots, but were unable to net the tying score.
Â
The Pioneers defense stood out on multiple occasions this afternoon as junior goalkeeper
Amelia Henderhan (2-2-1) came up with four saves in the win. Multiple key defensive stops late in the second half also prevented the Dragon's comeback.
Â
The Malone women's soccer team looks to keep the momentum going after the home win as they prepare for another home G-MAC match on Thursday, September 25 against the Lake Erie College. Kick-off is scheduled for 5:00 P.M.
