COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Malone University baseball team was defeated by Ohio Dominican University on Saturday in a doubleheader. The Pioneers fall to 16-29 overall and 7-21 inside the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) with losses of 8-5 and 12-5. The Panthers are looking to clinch a berth to the G-MAC Tournament at 18-28 and 12-16 in conference play.
GAME ONE RECAP:
Malone fell behind 2-0 through one inning, but quickly turned things around in the second.
Anthony Ryan started the scoring with a solo homerun and
Eric Baum followed that up with an RBI single and
Anthony Bartiromo with a double to make it 3-2.
Things got away from the Pioneers in the third when the Panthers rallied for six runs to chase the starter
Finn Schmitt (2-6) from the game.
Jake Barker scored a run in the fifth with an RBI double and then Bartiromo had another run batted in with a sixth-inning single, but it was not enough to complete the rally in the 8-5 loss.
Bartiromo, Ryan and
Jordan Stevens had multi-hit games for Malone.
Cole Miller provided excellent support from the Pioneer bullpen with 3.1 innings without a run.
GAME TWO RECAP:
Baum got things started on the right foot with an RBI single in the second, but a pair of homeruns and several unearned runs in the third led to a 6-1 deficit. Ohio Dominican increased the lead to 8-1 in the fourth with a sacrifice fly and a run-scoring single.
The two teams would trade runs over the final few innings to get to the 12-5 final score.
Ethan Petak had a sacrifice fly in the fifth and RBI single in the seventh while Bartiromo left the yard and
Allen Diaz added a sacrifice fly for the Malone offense.
Several Pioneers had multiple hits, including Ryan (3), Bartiromo (2), Baum (2) and
Zach Root (2).
Jacob Rollyson (2-5) allowed six runs, but just three were earned.
Cooper Davies had two strikeouts and allowed one unearned run in his inning of relief work.
