Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball Defeated on the Road

NORTH CANTON, Ohio – The Malone University baseball team was swept by Walsh University on Tuesday with a 3-2 walk-off loss in game one and an 8-2 defeat in game two. The Pioneers have two more series inside the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) to make a push for the postseason, but these losses severally hinder their chances at 14-26 overall and 5-19 in conference play. The Cavaliers are now 14-22 and 12-11.

GAME ONE RECAP:
The Walsh pitching staff was able to work around traffic on the basepaths early in game one and eventually broke through for the game's first run in the top of the fifth with a two-out RBI single by Jake Barker. The Cavaliers responded with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning to draw back to even.

The teams battled evenly in the sixth as well with an RBI double by Eric Baum to plate Zach Flohr and an error led to a run for Walsh in the bottom half of the inning. Cooper Davies (0-2) entered the game in relief in the seventh and final inning, but a costly error allowed the game-winning run to score for the home squad in the 3-2 loss.

The starting pitcher Cole Miller allowed just two hits and one earned run and struck out six in six innings of work. Anthony Bartiromo was the lone hitter with multiple hits, but Rafe Bonifay was 1-for-1 with a double, walk and a sacrifice.

GAME TWO RECAP:
A two-run homerun by Allen Diaz in the top of the first put the Pioneers in front to begin game two. The Cavaliers scratched across one run in the bottom half of the inning and a solo homerun in the third tied the score at 2-2.

From there, it was all Walsh as the home team rattled off eight runs in a row in total, including six from the fifth inning on. The deficit would eventually grow to 8-2 and that is what the final would be after a scoreless relief appearance from Kai Duda.

Nate Plack (1-3) started the game and tossed five innings in the loss. He struck out three of the four hitters for the Pioneers. Diaz's homerun was the only extra-base hit for Malone in game two, but Zach Root had a hit in his lone plate appearance.

UP NEXT:
Malone plays host to Tiffin University in a single non-conference affair on Wednesday, April 23 at Thurman Munson Memorial Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 P.M.
