Softball Suffers Setback at Thomas More

CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. – In a rescheduling from a previous postponement, the Malone University softball team was defeated by Thomas More University on Monday 6-1 in game one and 5-4 in game two. The Pioneers fall to 20-14 overall and 6-10 inside the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC). The Saints are now 18-24 and 6-14 in league play.

GAME ONE RECAP:
A four-run bottom of the second inning for Thomas More put the opponents in front early. The deficit was too much to overcome for an offense that could only muster up one run on their seven hits. The Saints meanwhile scored six runs off of their seven hits. Thomas More was able to take advantage of seven walks distributed by Mia Rose.

The Saints added on in the third inning with a pair of runs, one on an RBI single and a second via a bases loaded walk. Thomas More walked the bases loaded in the fifth to give the Pioneers an opportunity to score, but the chance was squandered on a fielder's choice out.

Malone's run came across to score in the seventh with an RBI single by Faith Yoho. Yoho, Rose and Amber Miller were each credited with two hits apiece. Rose (8-9) struck out four in the loss.

GAME TWO RECAP:
The Pioneers fell behind yet again at the start of game two with two hits by the Saints and a costly error. The 2-0 lead would remain until the late innings. A pair of infield singles set up Thomas More to double their advantage to 4-0 in the bottom of the fifth.

The offense woke up in the sixth and batted around to draw even at 4-4. Lacie Quarles and Jessie Crookston began the inning with singles and an error loaded the bases. Rose drove in a run on an infield single and then an error and wild pitch scored two more for Malone. A sacrifice fly by Sidney Conti tied the contest up.

The Pioneers were one out away from forcing extra innings, but three consecutive hits by the Saints allowed the home squad to walk it off, 5-4. Allie Weilnau (12-5) struck out four and allowed three earned runs of the five that came across to score.
