Baseball Shutout by Northwood

CANTON, Ohio – The Malone University baseball team fell to 9-13 overall and 2-6 in Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) play after two shutout losses on Saturday to Northwood University (13-10, 8-0 G-MAC). The Pioneers lost game one 8-0 and game two 4-0.

GAME ONE RECAP:
The Timberwolves plated two runs in the top of the first to claim a lead right away in the game. Northwood doubled their lead with two additional runs in the third inning. Errors in the fourth and sixth innings for the Malone defense allowed for three unearned runs to cross the plate to further increase the Timberwolves' lead to 7-0. A sacrifice fly in the seventh put the finishing touches on an 8-0 win for Northwood.

Jake Barker had a multi-hit game at 2-for-3 and had one of the team's two extra-base hits with a double. Jordan Stevens had the other two-bagger. Reilly Tyna reached base twice with a pair of walks. On the mound, Finn Schmitt (2-2) received the loss after he allowed seven hits, five runs (four earned) and three walks in 3.1 innings of work. He struck out a team-high four batters.

GAME TWO RECAP:
RBI base hits for the Timberwolves in the second and third innings once again gave the visiting team the advantage early at 2-0. A solo homerun in the fifth and a ninth-inning RBI single grew the lead to 4-0 for Northwood.

The Pioneers shared eight hits evenly amongst the starting nine but could not scratch across a run. Tyna, Stevens and Eric Baum reached base twice with one hit and one walk. Jacob Rollyson (1-2) pitched six innings and surrendered seven hits and three runs. Caesen Sutton tossed two innings of scoreless baseball from the bullpen.
